🎃Spooked in South Carolina

On our most recent Field Trip Friday, we traveled to Moore Farms Botanical Gardens to explore what it truly means to create a Southern Garden. Moore Farms is known for combining cutting-edge horticultural practices with time-honored rural gardening traditions — demonstrating how gardens can both inform and inspire.

We began our visit at the Fire Tower Gardens, then moved through a series of beautifully designed and thoughtful garden spaces — the Ruins, Asian Woodland, Vegetable Garden, Formal Garden, Mediterranean Garden and the Spring House. Each area was distinct in style, planting approach, structure, and interpretation of sense of place — and all were DECKED OUT for Halloween, adding extra charm and personality to our fall visit.

One of the highlights was being escorted by one of the horticulturists into an “employees only” area where we were able to view their Green Roof and Living Wall installations. Thanks Mike for asking!

After our garden exploration, we wrapped up the day with a delicious lunch stop at Schoolhouse BBQ in nearby Scranton, SC. This nostalgic restaurant is located in a 1930’s school building which once served the local Black community — today serving traditional Southern comfort food in a laid-back, friendly atmosphere — the perfect ending to an educational (and tasty!) Field Trip Friday.
