Description: Blue Heaven® is a robust, tall and bright variation of Little Bluestem. It starts out with light blue foliage in the spring. Deep pink and burgundy hues materialize during late summer and graduate into copper at the leaf tips in the fall. Like other Little Bluestem, Blue Heaven® attracts birds and serves as a larval host for several species of skipper butterflies. Once established Schizachyrium scoparium ‘MinnBlueA’ is drought tolerant and deer leave it alone. Blue Heaven® loves sun and well-drained soils with poor nutrients. Excess moisture, fertilization, and shade may result in floppy growth.

Wildlife Values: Little bluestem is one of the best grasses for nesting and roosting habitat. The seeds are consumed by small mammals and birds, including rosy finches and juncos, as well as chipping, field, and tree sparrows. This is a larval host plant that supports various skipper larvae and Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala) which have one brood from late May to October. Adult Common Wood-Nymph butterflies feed on rotting fruit and flower nectar.
