Our first workshops of the year were a great success! With a full turnout of 51 participants across 2 sessions, the Herb Container Workshop brought together Master Gardeners and community members for a hands-on introduction to growing herbs at home.

Led by Michele Tullai and Wanda Maggart, the workshop covered the techniques we use to grow herbs, including starting plants from cuttings, plugs, and seeds, as well as best practices for planting and caring for container gardens. Participants learned how to select appropriate containers, use the right potting mix, and group herbs based on similar light and moisture needs .

Each participant created their own container garden, choosing three herbs to plant on-site and taking home two additional plants. Master Gardener volunteers were on hand throughout the workshop to assist with planting and answer questions.

Why Grow Herbs in Containers?

Container gardening is a simple and effective way to grow herbs, especially in smaller spaces. Because you can control soil, light, and watering conditions, containers make it easier to grow a wide variety of plants successfully.

Many herbs thrive in well-drained conditions and are well-suited to containers. They also support pollinators and beneficial insects, and keeping them close to your kitchen makes them easy to harvest and use .
