Description: 'Blackbeard' is an upright, compact, dark purple-leaved selection of beardtongue that features pink flowers held on sturdy, dark purple stems. The blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators. Mature plants will reach up to 3' tall with a 2' spread. Attractive dark burgundy seed pods follow the flowering performance for extended seasonal interest. ‘Blackbeard’ stays strictly upright all season long with no lodging. This one takes the heat and humidity in stride but is also very cold hardy.

Roots were applied to arrow and gun wounds, while leaves were used in poultices for burns, sores, cuts, and swelling. Decoctions were consumed for coughs, colds, chest congestion, stomachaches, and to treat diarrhea or "clean out the stomach".
