This shrub can be pruned back to 6 inches in early spring to promote compactness and encourage the new wood on which blooming occurs. A fast-growing perennial, Pearl Glam beautyberry is a lovely ornamental shrub in mass plantings, borders, and even container plantings with its display of summer flowers and fall berries.

Historical Uses:  A cultivar, ‘Pearl Glam’ inherits traditional uses from the native American beautyberry (C. americana), which was historically used for its medicinal and insect-repellent properties. Crushed leaves were rubbed on skin and animal coats to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fire ants. Native American tribes utilized decoctions of roots and leaves to treat malaria, rheumatism, and stomachaches. First record of native plant in 1771.

Wildlife Values:  'Pearl Glam' is a high-value, deciduous shrub that supports wildlife with early-summer nectar for pollinators (bees, butterflies) and, crucially, abundant, bright purple berries in late summer/fall for songbirds, including mockingbirds, cardinals, and finches. It also provides food for small mammals like squirrels and raccoons.
