Want to peek inside the Master Gardener shed? See a “Bucket of Doom” in action? Or simply spend a morning exploring 17 unique garden spaces?

Explore. Ask questions. Learn something new. Get inspired. The NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers in Brunswick County invite the community to the Brunswick County Botanical Garden Open House on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public.

Visitors can wander through 17 distinct garden spaces, with Master Gardener volunteers stationed throughout the garden to answer questions, point out interesting plants and share ideas for gardening successfully in Brunswick County.

“One thing I’ve learned from working in the garden is just how friendly and knowledgeable our Master Gardener volunteers are,” said Patty Petrella, president of the Brunswick County Master Gardener Volunteer Association. “I always learn something new when I’m there.”

This year’s Open House will feature the largest number of special demonstration and information stations offered at the event to date. Visitors can learn about composting, bring their own pruners for a hands-on sharpening lesson, discover what to plant this fall and pick up a free soil sample kit. Other stations will explore rain gardens, ways to reduce wildfire risk around the home and what it takes to become an Extension Master Gardener volunteer.

And there’s more: peek inside the Master Gardener shed, see the “Bucket of Doom” demonstration for mosquito control, learn about rain barrels available for purchase, and enjoy refreshments offered by Brunswick County 4-H Youth Council Club members.

“So many people enjoy coming to our Open House because it’s a great place to be inspired and learn something new,” said Anne Coleman, an Extension Master Gardener volunteer and organizer of this year’s event. “We have many new residents in Brunswick County who are discovering what gardening in the South is all about, and we love helping unlock some of those secrets for them.”

The Botanical Garden itself is part of the experience. Its garden spaces showcase a wide variety of plants and growing conditions, giving visitors an opportunity to see what thrives in Brunswick County. Explore sunny and shady native gardens, pollinator and rain gardens, edible and rose gardens, and other specialty spaces designed to educate and inspire.

The Brunswick County Botanical Garden is located at 25 Referendum Road, Building N, Bolivia. The Open House will be held Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. There is no rain date.
