Story Walk

Step into the beauty of the Brunswick County Botanical Garden this June and experience a Story Walk in full bloom. From June 5 through July 7, visitors of all ages are invited to explore the gardens while enjoying A Rose Named Peace: How Francis Meilland Created a Flower of Hope for a World at War by Barbara Carroll Roberts, illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline.

Not familiar with Story Walks? A Story Walk is a self-guided outdoor reading adventure where pages of a children’s book are displayed along a walking path. Created by the Brunswick County Extension Master Gardenerā„  Volunteers, this family-friendly experience blends the joy of reading with the beauty of nature. Begin to the right of the Extension Office entrance and follow the story page by page as you stroll through the gardens at your own pace—there’s no set start time, and participation is free.

This year’s Story Walk has been scheduled to showcase the splendor of the Botanical Garden’s Rose Garden at peak bloom. Featuring more than 50 varieties suited to the North Carolina Coastal Plain, the Rose Garden provides a vibrant and fitting backdrop for this inspiring story.

The featured book tells the remarkable true story of Francis Meilland, a young French horticulturist whose passion for roses led him to create what would become known around the world as the Peace Rose. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story follows his determination to protect and share his creation—symbolizing hope, resilience, and the enduring beauty of nature even in uncertain times. With rich, detailed illustrations and gentle storytelling, the book appeals to gardeners, history enthusiasts, and young readers alike.

Often described as a hidden gem within the Brunswick County Government Complex, the Brunswick County Botanical Garden offers 16 distinct garden areas designed to educate and inspire. Visitors can explore demonstration gardens, discover plants suited to coastal conditions, and find ideas for their own landscapes.

The Brunswick County Botanical Garden is located outside the Brunswick County Extension Office at 25 Referendum Drive, Building N, Bolivia, NC 28422. Admission and parking are free, and no registration is required.

Come read, explore, and discover the story behind a rose that inspired the world!
