đExploring the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden
As part of our Field Trip Fridays program, the Brunswick County Extension Master Gardenerâ Volunteers enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden in Wilmington. This unique park, dedicated to the conservation of native carnivorous plants, offers one of the few protected public spaces where these rare species can be seen in their natural habitat.
During the visit, volunteers observed several types of native carnivorous plants, including sundews, Venus flytraps, and bladderworts. The pitcher plants were especially striking, thriving in the sandy soil and wetland environment with their tall, tubular traps catching the sunlight. These specialized plants not only provided a lesson in botany but also showcased the importance of conserving delicate ecosystems found only in this region of the Carolinas.
The trip was both educational and inspiring, highlighting the biodiversity that makes southeastern North Carolina such a special place for gardeners and nature lovers alike.
